Francis Sherman Currey (June 29, 1925 – October 8, 2019) was a United States Armytechnical sergeant and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration for valor—the Medal of Honor—for his heroic actions in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

Biography[edit]

Currey was born in Loch Sheldrake, New York, on June 29, 1925. After being orphaned at age 12, he was raised by foster parents on a farm in nearby Hurleyville.[1] He joined the Army at age 17, one week after graduating Hurleyville High School.[2] Although he completed Officer Candidate School, at only 18 years old, his superiors felt that he was 'too immature' to be an officer and denied him a commission.[3]

T/Sgt Currey used these weapons while halting a German attack on his company during the Battle of the Bulge

Currey landed at Omaha Beach in July 1944, a few weeks after D-Day. In September, he was assigned as a replacement without winter gear (he later suffered from frostbite) to 3rd Platoon, K Company, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in Netherlands.[3] He saw his first combat action that month. Six weeks later, he was a sergeant and 3rd Platoon Leader in K Company. On December 21, 1944, Private First Class Currey was an automatic rifleman in a rifle squad which was guarding a bridge crossing and strongpoint. He repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire while firing upon and killing several German infantrymen during an early morning German tank advance in Malmedy, Belgium. During the attack, he used a bazooka and anti-tank grenades which caused four enemy tank crews to abandon their tanks and also enabled him to rescue five comrades who had been pinned down in a building by enemy fire.[4] After the Battle of the Bulge, he became a squad leader, and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action at his regiment's command post.[5]

In March 1945, Currey's company commander recommended him for the Medal of Honor for his actions on December 21. The Medal of Honor was presented to Currey on July 27, 1945, by the 30th Infantry Division division commander, Major General Leland Hobbs, near Reims, France;[1] the medal was officially awarded to him on August 17, 1945.[6] After the war was over in Europe, he received his 3rd Purple Heart for being shot in Bavaria while disarming German soldiers. He returned to the United States in August as a first sergeant after occupational duty and a stop in England aboard the Queen Mary.[7]

Currey worked as a counselor at the VA Medical Center in Albany, New York from 1950 until he retired as a supervisor, in 1980. After he retired from the VA, he started and ran a landscaping business. He also worked at a hotel booking conventions in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, until 2002.[1]

He died on October 8, 2019, in Selkirk, New York.[8]

Medal of Honor citation[edit]

Currey's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company K, 120th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division
Place and date: Malmedy, Belgium, December 21, 1944
Entered service at: Hurleyville, N.Y.
Birth: Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.G.O. No. 69, August 17, 1945

He was an automatic rifleman with the 3rd Platoon defending a strong point near Malmedy, Belgium, on 21 December 1944, when the enemy launched a powerful attack. Overrunning tank destroyers and antitank guns located near the strong point, German tanks advanced to the 3rd Platoon's position, and, after prolonged fighting, forced the withdrawal of this group to a nearby factory. Sgt. Currey found a bazooka in the building and crossed the street to secure rockets meanwhile enduring intense fire from enemy tanks and hostile infantrymen who had taken up a position at a house a short distance away. In the face of small-arms, machinegun, and artillery fire, he, with a companion, knocked out a tank with 1 shot. Moving to another position, he observed 3 Germans in the doorway of an enemy-held house. He killed or wounded all 3 with his automatic rifle. He emerged from cover and advanced alone to within 50 yards of the house, intent on wrecking it with rockets. Covered by friendly fire, he stood erect, and fired a shot which knocked down half of 1 wall. While in this forward position, he observed 5 Americans who had been pinned down for hours by fire from the house and 3 tanks. Realizing that they could not escape until the enemy tank and infantry guns had been silenced, Sgt. Currey crossed the street to a vehicle, where he procured an armful of antitank grenades. These he launched while under heavy enemy fire, driving the tankmen from the vehicles into the house. He then climbed onto a half-track in full view of the Germans and fired a machinegun at the house. Once again changing his position, he manned another machine gun whose crew had been killed; under his covering fire the 5 soldiers were able to retire to safety. Deprived of tanks and with heavy infantry casualties, the enemy was forced to withdraw. Through his extensive knowledge of weapons and by his heroic and repeated braving of murderous enemy fire, Sgt. Currey was greatly responsible for inflicting heavy losses in men and material on the enemy, for rescuing 5 comrades, 2 of whom were wounded, and for stemming an attack which threatened to flank his battalion's position.[6]

Bazooka-Med Solution - MoHAA

Introduction

The Bazooka-Med is a special level in MoHAA, or, we may say, a secret level, because you cannot access it unless you conform to certain conditions. Some say that it is an easter-egg inside the game. The fact is that the Bazooka-Med level automatically starts, right after the Sniper Town level, of Mission 5: Deer avenger download full game.

  • if you are playing the game in HARD difficulty setting and
  • if you manage to finish the Sniper's Last Stand - City Hall level with the three-member tank crew alive and, at least, some more guys from the Outskirts level also alive (pic. 1).

After you gain a new and already completed objective (weird, huh?), 'Bring reinforcements all the way through Sniper Town', a blank level will start and finish, almost immediately (it will be saved as Void, in your Save/Load dialog) and, then, the secret level will begin.

Interesting is that you cannot save the Bazooka-Med level; if you try to quicksave it, when you load the saved game, it will begin already finished (at the stat page). So, the only way for you to be able to repeat it easily, is to save the game, at the Sniper Town yet, a short time before it ends.

Enough. If you don't want to spoil the fun, don't read further. That's all you need to know. Now go beat the Sniper Town level, at hard mode, protect your squad, and have fun! But, if you are stuck into this level and want to beat that smart guy, the Bazooka-Med, then keep on reading. If you just want to know what this level is about and some hints, then read further but skip the solution topic.

Note: The first time I played the game, I kept six men alive (pic. 1). After replaying the Sniper Town level, I managed to end it with eight men alive (see my walkthrough for Sniper's Last Stand - City Hall). I'm not sure that if you end that level with just one or two additional men alive (besides the complete tank crew), you'll be granted with the Bazooka-Med special level.

First, this level is a big surprise. It has nothing to do with the history line of the game. As soon as the level begins, you will lose your tank crew. These messages will appear: 'Sergeant Hammon has been killed in action.', 'T/2 Engineer Campbell has been killed in action.' and 'T/4 Medic Glenn has been killed in action.' Then, the next messages are:

You have 60 seconds to find a safe hiding spot.
. and then Bazooka-Med will be on your trail!

ready, set, GO!! Then, the countdown will begin, 60 seconds. You are at the Sniper Town, you're already used to this map. So, run and find a safe place to hide. After the 60 sec, you cannot change your chosen hiding spot anymore. Then, the Bazooka-Med will hunt you down: Ready or not, here I come! Good luck. You watch him looking for you in a third person view. When he finds out your trail, you get the message: BAZOOKA-MED HAS THE TRAIL !! (pic. 2) If he eventually got lost: Bazooka-Med seems to have lost the trail If he finds you: The Bazooka-Med has you. Then he will kill you with his bazooka: You lose. Hide better (this final message varies). You don't have any chance to fight him. It's a hide-and-seek game.

More Info & Tips

Before showing you the solutions, let me give you some more information about the level:

  1. You can hide anywhere in the Sniper Town, he will ALWAYS find your trail; you can jump bridges, you can jump through walls, through holes, you can walk in circles, you can do whatever, he will find it! The Bazooka-Med is like a good hunting dog.

  2. Bazooka-Med always starts keeping track of your trail from the point where you were started; the place you start is randomized as well as the sequence of these places that Bazooka-Med will look for. There are around eight possible starting positions for you and Bazooka-Med will look for these starting positions, randomly, one by one, until he finds the one in which you were started; then, he'll have you're trail and he will follow your steps; he may occasionally lost your trail but chances are that he'll find it again, in case you have jumped from a hole or from the bridge. If he didn't find your trail again, then he will go back to your starting position (that he already knows) and he will follow your steps again.

  3. Bazooka-Med will search for you for approximately 4 minutes and 30 seconds; if he doesn't find you after these period of time, he dies.

So, there are two known solutions: to hide in a place where Bazooka-Med won't be able to find you, or to hide in a place where, although he will find you, he won't be able to reach you with his bazooka.

The first and obvious solution is to hide in a spot where Bazooka-Med cannot find you. I know just one place where this is possible: below the building that has a basement and two entrances in the form of an arch to access this basement (pic. 3). To enter this basement, you must crouch and pass through the arch.
But, once inside the basement, you must stay in the correct corner. First, enter the basement using the arch shown in the picture 3; do not use the other arch, to the right side. Then, after you pass the arch, turn left, head to the nearest corner, and stay there. You'll notice that you will go up a little because you'll be climbing a debris in this corner (pic. 4).
After 4m30s of searching, Bazooka-Med will die and you'll receive the following award message: Congratulations, you have eluded Bazooka-Med (pic. 5). You can actually see him die.

The other solution seems weird. How come I can find a place where Bazooka-Med will find me but won't be able to reach me with his shots? You will crouch and use the furniture, or some other obstacle, to protect you against the bazooka shots. I know this is mendacious, but it works in the game.

There are three places that I know of. The first one is under the same basement that you can use to elude Bazooka-Med. Instead of using the mentioned corner, stay crouched in any one of the other two corners; he'll find you but his shots will not harm you: they will explode outside the basement. After five to seven shots, Bazooka-Med will die and you'll receive the following award message: Congratulations! Could have sworn he had you. If he finds you but cannot kill you, it is always this message that is shown. Note that if you use the eluding corner but you have made your way to the basement through the other arch, or if you have just passed near the other arch, you will not elude him. Bazooka-Med will find you but he won't be able to kill you (he'll die, anyway).

The other place to hide is in a room, at the second floor of the first building that you can go inside, in the beginning of the map, near the arched construction (Pic. 6).
Once inside the room, crouch behind the cabinet and hug the wall (pic. 7). The Bazooka-Med will find you but he will not enter the room, he will fire five times the bazooka from outside the room (from the corridor) and then he will die.
The last known place to hide (this was found out by a reader codenamed Tretch Axebiter) is also crouched, in the corner, behind the bed, in the room where you meet the tank crew and get the bazooka ammo (pic. 8). The Bazooka-Med finds you, but the bed protects you from the bazooka.

These are the known solutions. Of course there must have many more. Since you know the secrets of the secret level, you can try to find other safe hiding spots now.

Last, as a curiosity, let me quote an interesting message I've read, from the same reader: 'I can elude Bazooka-Med by jumping onto the bed's footboard, then jump onto the headboard, and then jump down behind the bed and crouch. He follows the trail to the foot of the bed then turns around and leaves. If I step on the mattress or walk to the side of the bed, he goes up the stairs, sees me and fires away (but he can't hit me!)' Well, although I never tried to do that, it's a very interesting way of beating Bazooka-Med (pic. 9).

Obs.: There are no cheated screenshots illustrating this text, only real screenshots.

Hope It Helped !!
