This allowed producers to make music on the go between very different versions of the Vocaloid software for the first time. It was later adapted for the Vocaloid Neo version of the Vocaloid 3 software, allowing it to work with Macs. Though it was designed to work for both Window or Mac, it was only possible to install one version or the other, as is the current case for all Mac versions of Vocaloid. In regards to its limitations, like Vocaloid Neo the Mac version was limited to being only able to use Mac compatible vocals such as Galaco Neo or VY1v3 Neo. As a result, the entire Vocaloid 2 catalog could not be used for the Mac version of Vocaloid Editor for Cubase at all.

I do all my production on a macbook pro and I was wondering if there's a way to get Vocaloid 4 working outside of bootcamp / running it in a VM. I have a windows PC which I use for gaming but I'm going to be travelling a lot and would much rather have all my production software on my macbook. I noticed that the system specs of VY1v4 list OSX under the OS requirements, but the Vocaloid 4 editor is windows only. Does that mean I can just buy VY1v4 by itself without the editor and use it? Wikipedia lists OSX support for Vocaloid 4 but I'd like to get some confirmation that it actually works before I shell out $250. Unfortunately YAMAHA is making getting into Vocaloid4 very, very difficult for Vocaloid users outside of Japan. The V4 engine debuted in December and STILL the V4 Editor is not available to Americans, not even digitally.
And physical copies aren't being sold outside of Japan. Looking at the Vocaloid Shop, there isn't a standalone Vocaloid 4 Editor for Cubase, only an upgrade from the V3 version to V4. There IS good (decent?) support for OSX among Vocaloid3 voicebanks; most of the more popular ones are available for it. And I expect that will continue with Vocaloid4 voicebanks, but right now it's difficult to get into if you aren't Japanese.: / Since most of the most popular voicebanks are available for V3, you might consider getting the V3 Editor for Cubase and a V3 Vocaloid; but if you can, it might be best to wait until the end of the year to see if YAMAHA can pull their heads out of their butts soon. Hey, thanks for the response! I was thinking about buying a physical copy since I'll be in Japan at my in-laws for a few weeks, but then I realised that my laptop doesn't have a DVD drive and I'd have to shell out even more to buy a USB one.
So I ruled out the YAMAHA route. From there, the only real choices I had left were Cryptons stuff which comes with Piapro studio, UTAU, or similar software like Realitone's Blue or Soundiron's Voices of Rage. I tried out UTAU but the licensing with the voice banks was a bit of a nightmare along with having to get a new license every 30 days (what if the UTAU web server goes down while I'm in the middle of writing an album?). I was willing to give it a shot anyway so I got the Hakaine Maiko sound bank working and it was pretty amazing, but suffered from a lot of inconsistencies (different pitched screams for different syllables, squeals on da and su). The UTAU editor was also a total nightmare, hahaha:( SoundIron's Voices of Rage was cool, but it doesn't have a phoneme sequencer so I'd be stuck with the 100 words that they'd prerecorded and that didn't sound like a great idea overall. Realitone's Blue was beautiful sounding but not really what I'm looking for.
I mainly produce progressive metal and while I'm aiming to branch out into some outrun / vapourware I still want to skirt on the side of realism and so I had to rule out Miku. The only two left were Meiko and Luka.
I was worried that Luka would sound completely robotic but after looking around for a bit I figured that most of the roboticness comes from a lack of tuning, and I'm more than willing to put time in to making her sound good. I also didn't want to pay the same price for a v3 Vocaloid. So in the end, Luka v4 was my only real choice. Wasn't expecting an 11gb download though!
